Get Back Up

Life has two rules: Number one, never quit;
Number two, always remember rule number one.

— Duke Ellington

I was watching a little kid the other day at church. He toddled down the hall, stopped, lost his balance, and fell down to his seat. Perhaps it was the diaper that padded his seat, or maybe it’s just because as a toddler, he’s used to it, but he didn’t squawk or cry. First off, he busied himself looking at the carpet where he fell, as if he intended all along to be there, but then he got up and moved down the hall again, as if nothing had ever happened.

It’s easy for us to see this little child, just learning how to walk, and see his falls and his halting steps as just a part of normal learning. In fact, we all had to go through that same learning — and we all had to get used to falling and then getting back up.

As a child, we think nothing of it. Oh sure, if our mother was around, we might cry a little bit, just for sympathy, but most of us were so low to the ground, that unless we took a spill on concrete, our little falls and tumbles didnÔÇÖt mean a whole lot.

But as adults, too often, we forget those lessons learned. We find ourselves held down by the spills and wrong turns that we take in life. We find ourselves forever altered by a bad decision, or forever marred by a mistake made when we were young and stupid.

We don’t remember that lesson — that it doesn’t really matter how many times you fall, as long as you get up.

Life has its pitfalls and troubles, it’s true. There are few of us who will go through life without having setbacks or trials. Hardly anybody leaves this life without a broken heart or two, whether it be from puppy love or from a marriage that has gone awry. Most of us have financial setbacks of one sort or another, and a lot of us have other, more serious, challenges — from health to relationships.

But no matter how many times we get knocked down by life, the key is still the same. As long as we get up more times than we’re knocked down, our life is still a success.

This little lesson, which we learned as a child, is still true today. Fall down? Get back up, even if you have to study the carpeting for a while. Get back up, brush yourself off, and keep on going.
