Keep on Shining

A [year] or so ago, comedienne Phyllis Diller died. Those of us who remember her remember her brash voice, her cackling laugh, her bizarre hair. But a few days after she died, the Wall Street Journal ran this quote from her autobiography:

“Sure, I’ve experienced my fair share of unhappiness, but throughout the years I’ve always tried to express and give cheer. One of my earliest memories is of standing as a teenie little kid in Sunday school, singing a hymn whose words still resonate in my ears:

Brighten the corner where you are!

Brighten the corner where you are!

Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar;

Brighten the corner where you are!

I bought that. And I sold it.”

And that brings up the topic for this week’s installment: keep on shining.

The song, of course, refers to a lighthouse, which stands as a beacon to mariners. Protecting mariners from a rocky shoal, a reef, a narrow inlet, or a treacherous entry, the lighthouse brightens the harbor around it, and provides a known location from which mariners may calculate their position.

In today’s age of GPS guidance systems, the lighthouse might be an outmoded mechanism, but the lessons we can learn from this little ditty are ones that can aid us in our lives — brighten the corner where you are.

Each of us can stand in our lives as a positive example for the people around us — bringing light, cheer, and positive energy into their lives. Most of us have an experience where someone around us brightened up an otherwise gloomy day, and in the process, made our lives better and our opportunities greater. If that person hadn’t brightened you up, your life might have been severely different.

Choose this day to stand as a beacon of hope to others around you. Give them a positive light in desperate circumstances. Stand as a marker of guidance to those who are in trouble in their life. Light up their lives and guide them to a better place on a safer shore.
