Ring in the new year with less stress

yoga poseResolutions can go beyond losing weight or exercising more. Some of the most life-changing resolutions involve finding more happiness and managing stress more effectively.

Here are six ways to find more happiness and live with less stress:

  • Define “happy” for yourself. Happiness exists when different elements of life (like social, personal, and financial) are all in balance. The right balance is different for each person and depends on each person’s priorities. What is the right mix for you?
  • Focus on the positive. Continually remind yourself of your strengths, rather than focusing on weaknesses. Build on your strengths rather than dwelling on things you aren’t particularly satisfied with or can’t change.
  • Be nice to yourself. Everyone has bad days. Try not to be too hard on yourself if something doesn’t go as planned at work or at home. Remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can today and keep moving forward
  • Spend valuable face time with your family and friends. Connecting directly with people is an important part of creating happiness. Making an effort to socialize with others in-person and having events to look forward to can greatly increase happiness. From sightseeing outings to sports or theater events to long walks to meeting up with friends at a coffee shop, the experiences and new perspectives will stick with you long after the event itself.
  • Get quality sleep. To sleep longer and improve the quality of your sleep, try these tips:
    • Establish a pre-sleep routine to help prepare you for sleep
    • Get up at the same time every day
    • Establish a soothing sleeping environment—a quiet, dark, and cool room can help promote sound sleep
    • Avoid using any type of “screens” for an hour before bed (e.g., TV, computers, tablets, smartphones, etc.).
    • Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol close to bedtime
    • Don’t go to bed until you’re ready to sleep
    • Get up at the same time every day
  • Do for others. There’s lots of research that says doing things for others, like volunteering or donating to charities, helps increase happiness. There’s also research that says doing nice things for people you know makes you even happier. Finding ways to help others is a sure way to boost happiness for you as well as others
  • Exercise for stress reduction.  Try a new fitness program that promotes stress reduction and better overall wellness such as Tai Cheng or Yoga
