How do you overcome stress in your life?

Do you deal with stress well?  When you feel stressed, do you tend to reach for food, alcohol, or cigarettes?  Or do you breathe deep (woosah), phone a friend, and work through it to stay calm?

How do you know you are stressed?

overcome stress 5Are you seriously stressed out (signs of depression, weight gain, hair loss, lowered immunity, vomiting, nosebleeds, headaches, memory loss….) these are very serious signs and you should seek medical or mental help from a professional.  If you are unsure, here is a site for Free Stress Assessment Tools If you are stressed from the perspective that you’ve got too much going on in your life, you can’t seem to focus or prioritize, you get angry and take it out on others when tasks are not completed perfectly or on-time, you are experiencing minor road rage…..then here are a few tips that might help you to cope, avoid, and reduce the stress in your life:

  • Exercise regularly (you saw that one coming, right?!)
  • Limit, reduce, avoid: alcohol, caffeine and sugar – you’ll sleep better!
  • Eliminate: cigarettes and drugs – effect is temporary and can increase stress long-term
  • Get enough sleep – know your number, most adults need 7-8 hours minimum – make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool
  • Keep a journal to identify when you get most stressed – what causes it and what can you do to avoid or eliminate from your life
  • Build relaxation into your daily, weekly, monthly routines – take a walk in nature, meditate for 10 minutes in the morning, take a yoga class, get a massage
  • Spend time with people or pets that make you feel relaxed and good about yourself
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff – remember everything in life is not critical or has a need to be perfect – know what to let go of (kid’s beds are made perfectly?!) and only focus on big impact areas of life (being at an important event in your kid’s life!)
